
Which app paid more for the hours you gave it?
Does a DoorDash vs Uber Eats pay calculator favor a $112 payout over a $100 payout? Only if the extra money survives the extra driving and waiting. In our hypothetical shifts, the $100 DoorDash run returns $20.75 per online hour after entered expenses. The $112 Uber Eats run returns $18.10. The bigger payout bought another hour of your day.
We compare completed shifts using one denominator: all the time you were online and available for work. Earnings include settled tips and earned bonuses. Expenses include your mileage cost and any separate tolls, parking or payout fees. The result answers which shift used your time better; it cannot predict which app will send better offers tomorrow.
Both platforms have variable offers, and neither app's name determines your net hourly pay. Uber's delivery earnings explanation describes upfront offers that account for estimated time and distance. Use the final earnings from your own history instead of inventing a fixed Uber Eats rate card or treating an advertised bonus as earned income.
2 shift records, one fair calculation
Here is the arithmetic behind our example. DoorDash produces $100 in four online hours over 50 miles. Uber Eats produces $112 in five online hours over 65 miles. Each shift has $2 in separate expenses. We assign the same car a hypothetical $0.30 per mile, covering fuel, wear and depreciation. These are demonstration inputs, not measured platform averages.
Net hourly pay = (driver earnings − miles × vehicle cost per mile − other costs) ÷ total online hours.
DoorDash: ($100 − 50 × $0.30 − $2) ÷ 4 = $20.75/hour. Uber Eats: ($112 − 65 × $0.30 − $2) ÷ 5 = $18.10/hour. DoorDash keeps $83 for the shift; Uber Eats keeps $90.50. Those shift totals answer a different question from hourly pay because one working period is 25% longer.

The $53 weekly difference assumes each recorded hourly result repeats across 20 hours. Adding midday shifts to a dinner-only sample can break that assumption. Why does active time make hourly earnings look higher?
Dividing DoorDash's $83 net by three active hours produces $27.67/hour. Dividing by the four hours actually committed produces $20.75/hour. Neither subtraction changed. The first calculation simply excluded one hour without an accepted order. In this example, active time covers 75% of the online shift, so the active-hour figure is one-third higher than the online-hour figure.
DoorDash's Earn by Time explanation distinguishes active time, from acceptance to completion, from total dash time. Its active-hour guarantee does not mean the same rate applies to every waiting minute between offers. Compare final earnings over total online time regardless of which DoorDash earning mode you used.
Keep personal breaks outside both samples, and handle positioning drives consistently. If you spend another 30 minutes driving to your delivery area, a separate door-to-door hourly calculation will be lower again. $13.25 is the bonus that closes this gap
The lower result needs more than a vague promise of busy-hour pay. At DoorDash's $20.75 hourly result, five Uber Eats hours would need to keep $103.75. Add $21.50 of expenses and required earnings become $125.25. Compared with the original $112 payout, that leaves a $13.25 shortfall. An extra $10 would improve the Uber Eats result but would not catch up.
This threshold assumes the bonus adds no time or mileage. Suppose earning that $13.25 requires another half hour and five miles. Net becomes $102.25 over 5.5 hours, or $18.59/hour, still below $20.75. A promotion tied to extra deliveries is a new shift scenario, not money you can add to the old result without changing its costs.
Build your own 4-shift comparison
Try two comparable dinner windows on each app, alternating platforms across similar weekdays. Record earnings, online hours, active hours and mileage each time. Keep a note of unusual incentives or unusually large tips. Four shifts are a starting sample, not proof of a lasting advantage, but they are more useful than comparing one holiday rush with one quiet Tuesday afternoon.
Combine each app's earnings and costs, then divide by its combined online hours. Don't average hourly rates without weighting them: a one-hour shift at $30 and a five-hour shift at $18 produce $120 over six hours, or $20/hour, not $24. Repeat the comparison without one-time bonuses. If a $20 incentive created the entire lead, you have evidence for that promotion window, not for switching all future shifts. When should you avoid choosing a winner?
Simultaneous multi-app shifts do not give two independent time samples. Four hours online on each app during the same four-hour evening is four hours of your life, not eight. Shared waiting time and miles cannot simply be charged twice. Use separate shifts to choose between apps; use combined earnings, unique miles and elapsed hours to assess that multi-app evening as one business session.
This comparison also assumes the same vehicle cost per mile. Derive fuel cost from gas price divided by MPG, then add your maintenance and depreciation estimate. For example, $3.60 gas at 30 MPG costs $0.12 per mile before wear. An EV or bicycle needs its own operating-cost estimate; zero fuel purchases do not automatically mean zero vehicle costs.
Keep tax deductions separate from operating profit.
