How Air Miles Are Calculated
Calculating the distance between two airports isn't as simple as measuring a straight line on a paper map. Because the Earth is a sphere (technically an oblate spheroid), the shortest path between any two points is an arc known as a Great Circle.

The Haversine Formula Explained
For the mathematically curious, the Haversine formula calculates the central angle between two points on a sphere. Here is a simplified breakdown of how it works:
- Convert Coordinates: Latitude and longitude are converted from degrees to radians.
- Calculate Deltas: The difference in latitude and longitude between the two points is determined.
- Apply Trigonometry: The formula uses sine and cosine functions to calculate the chord length between the points.
- Determine Arc Length: The inverse tangent function (atan2) is used to find the central angle, which is then multiplied by the Earth's radius (approx. 6,371 km or 3,959 miles) to get the distance.
Understanding Distance Units: Miles vs. Nautical Miles
In aviation and maritime navigation, distance is rarely measured in standard "statute" miles (the kind you see on highway signs). Instead, pilots and sailors use Nautical Miles (NM). It is crucial to understand the difference if you are involved in logistics or pilot training.

- Cruising Speed: Most commercial jets (like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320) cruise at approximately 500-550 knots (575-630 mph). Our calculator assumes an average ground speed of 500 mph to account for climb and descent phases.
- Headwinds vs. Tailwinds: The Jet Stream can significantly alter flight times. Flying east (e.g., New York to London) is often faster due to tailwinds, while flying west is slower due to headwinds.
- Taxi and ATC Delays: The "block time" listed on your ticket includes pushback, taxiing, and waiting for takeoff. Our calculator adds a standard 30-minute buffer to the pure flight time to account for takeoff and landing procedures.
