The Formula Every Boat Fuel Estimate Starts From

Every honest boat fuel cost calculator begins with one equation, and it has no miles in it at all:

Gallons per hour = (horsepower × 0.50) ÷ 6.1

That 0.50 is brake specific fuel consumption — the pounds of gasoline a marine four-stroke needs to make one horsepower for one hour. The 6.1 is what a gallon of gas weighs. Run a 250 hp outboard through it and you get 20.5 gallons an hour at wide open throttle. At the throttle setting most people actually cruise at, roughly 60% of rated power, it's 12.3 gph. On a $5.25 marina pump, that's $64.55 an hour— about $387 for a six-hour Saturday, before you've bought a single bag of ice.

Diesel uses the same shape with different constants: horsepower × 0.40 ÷ 7.2, because diesel burns leaner and weighs more per gallon. The same 250 horsepower from a diesel burns 8.3 gph at cruise instead of 12.3 — a third less fuel for identical power. That gap is the entire economic argument for diesel in a boat, and it's why the calculator above asks for engine type before it asks for anything else.

Your Boat Doesn't Have an MPG — Here's What It Has Instead

Ask a boat dealer for the MPG and you'll get a shrug, and they're right to give you one. A car meets the same road at the same speed every trip, so miles per gallon is a stable property of the car. A hull doesn't. Push a boat through water and the fuel it needs depends on throttle position, how loaded it is, whether it's up on plane or plowing, and whether it's fighting a two-foot chop. Distance barely enters into it.

So marine engines are rated the way generators are: by the hour. A boat only has an MPG figure once you attach a speed to it. Our 250 hp example at 12.3 gph and 30 mph works out to 2.44 mpg — and that figure is not a property of the boat, it's a property of that one throttle position. Slow to 24 mph and the same boat returns 3.81 mpg. Push to 33 and it drops to 2.02. Same hull, same afternoon, an 88% swing.

This is why the calculator gives you cost per hour first and cost per mile second. Cost per hour is the number that matches how you actually use the boat. Cost per mile only becomes useful when you're planning a run to a specific island and need to know whether the tank will cover it.

How Much Fuel Does a Boat Use Per Hour?

Here's what the formula produces across the boats most people are actually shopping for or already own. Every gallons-per-hour figure below comes from the same BSFC math the calculator uses, at the throttle setting each hull type realistically runs.

Hourly cost shown at $5.25/gal for every row so the boats compare directly. Marina diesel usually prices differently from marina gas — use your own pump price in the calculator.

Read the trawler row against the sportfish row, because it's the most instructive pair in the table. The sportfish makes 960 horsepower and burns 32 gallons an hour. The trawler makes 375 and burns 5.8. But look at MPG: 0.91 against 1.37 — only a 50% gap, not the 5x gap the hourly figures suggest. The sportfish is covering 29 miles in that hour and the trawler is covering 8. Hourly burn and cost per mile answer completely different questions, and confusing them is how people end up shocked at the fuel dock.

Why Slowing Down 6 MPH Cuts Your Fuel Bill by a Third

A planing hull's power demand rises with roughly the cubeof speed. Since you're also covering ground faster, fuel burned per mile ends up rising with the square of speed. That squared relationship is the single most valuable thing to understand about running a boat, because it means small speed reductions produce disproportionate savings.

Run the 24-foot center console from the table at four speeds and the arithmetic is brutal:

  • 24 mph: 6.30 gph, 3.81 mpg, $1.38 per mile
  • 27 mph: 8.97 gph, 3.01 mpg, $1.74 per mile
  • 30 mph: 12.30 gph, 2.44 mpg, $2.15 per mile
  • 33 mph: 16.37 gph, 2.02 mpg, $2.60 per mile

Backing off from 30 to 24 mph — six miles an hour, barely perceptible from the helm — drops cost per mile by 36%. On a 40-mile run to a favourite anchorage that's $86 against $55, and you arrive 20 minutes later. Across a 20-outing season the same restraint is worth several thousand dollars in fuel you simply never buy.

There is a floor to this, and it matters. Drop below minimum planing speed and the hull settles into the water, drags its own bow wave, and efficiency collapses — a boat plowing at half plane is the most expensive place on the throttle. The cheap zone is the narrow band just above where the hull settles onto plane, which on most 24-footers sits around 22-26 mph. That's why the speed table in the calculator only strays 20% from the cruise figure you enter: past that, the cube rule stops describing what your boat does.

Four Mistakes That Wreck a Season Fuel Budget

These are ordered by what they cost, using the 24-foot center console at 6 hours a trip and 20 trips a season — 1,476 gallons a year.

1. Budgeting at road-gas prices — about $3,100 a season.Marina fuel commonly runs $1 to $2 a gallon above the highway station, because a fuel dock sells low volume, absorbs delivery-by-barge costs, and knows you have no alternative once you're on the water. Budget 1,476 gallons at $3.15 instead of $5.25 and you'll be short by $3,100 by Labor Day. Check current pump prices against the EIA's weekly fuel price series and then add the dock premium your marina actually charges.

2. Running at fast cruise because it feels the same — about $2,320 a season. The step from efficient cruise to fast cruise is 12.3 gph to 15.98 gph. That's 3.68 extra gallons an hour, 22 gallons an outing, $116 a trip. Do it every weekend and it's $2,320 over the season for maybe four extra miles an hour. The throttle ladder in the calculator exists specifically to make this visible before the fuel dock does.

3. Ignoring what's growing on the bottom — roughly $930 a season.A slimed hull typically adds 10-15% to fuel burn, and heavier barnacle growth is far worse. At 12% on our example boat that's an extra 1.5 gph, 177 gallons a year, $930 in fuel to push around something a bottom cleaning would have removed. If your gph has crept up without any change in how you run the boat, look under it before you look at the engine.

4. Forgetting the tow to the ramp — around $200 a season.This is the one everybody remembers and it's the smallest of the four. A half-ton truck that returns 20 mpg empty drops to roughly 13 mpg pulling a 5,000 lb boat, so a 120-mile round trip to the lake burns about 3 extra gallons. What Your Fuel Gauge Will Show That the Math Won't

The BSFC formula gives you the burn a healthy engine produces making a given amount of power. It cannot see the specific things about your boat that change how much power it takes to move. Expect your real gph to land within about 15% of the estimate, and expect these to explain the gap:

  • Prop pitch.An over-pitched prop stops the engine reaching its rated rpm, so it lugs and burns more for the same speed. If your motor won't hit the top of its WOT range, the prop is costing you fuel every hour.
  • Load. Six adults, full water, and a loaded cooler can add 1,500 lb to a 24-footer. Extra weight raises the power needed to get on and stay on plane, and the effect is largest in exactly the speed band where you cruise.
  • Trim.Wrong trim angle either buries the bow or lifts it too far, and both add drag. Trimming for the speed you're actually running is free efficiency.
  • Sea state.Punching into a chop can add 20-30% over the same run on flat water. It's the reason a route that took 15 gallons in the morning takes 19 coming home in the afternoon breeze.

If you have a fuel-flow meter, use it — select "I know my actual gph" in the calculator and feed in the measured number. Everything downstream, including the throttle ladder and the range figures, recalculates from your boat rather than from an average one.

On range: the calculator applies the one-third rule that the US Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety and every boating course teach — a third of the tank going out, a third coming back, a third untouched for weather, current, and the headwind that wasn't forecast. At 12.3 gph and 2.44 mpg, a 100-gallon tank gives 220 miles of theoretical range but a safe turnaround only 81 miles from the ramp. That reserve isn't conservatism; it's the difference between a long afternoon and a tow bill.
