Does the cheaper part stay cheaper if it fails again?

A lifetime warranty replaces the alternator, not the $210 of labor to fit it. Each pair below shows how many more failures the cheaper unit would need, over the dearer one, before the dearer one wins on total cost while you own the car.

Assumes a parts-store lifetime warranty covers the part only, a new aftermarket unit is inside its warranty, and a dealer-installed OEM unit is redone at no charge inside 12 to 24 months. Outside those windows a repeat costs part and labor again.

Before you buy anything

A resting battery reads about 12.6 V; with the engine running, a conventional charging system holds roughly 13.5 to 14.7 V and anything under 13 V at idle is undercharging. Cars with computer-controlled charging can sit at 12.9 V on purpose, so ask for the free charging-system test at a parts store, or a load test, before paying for an alternator a battery would have fixed.

Alternator Replacement Cost: $467 With a Reman Part, $862 With OEM at the Dealer

Two quotes for the same midsize sedan, both honest. An independent shop fits a remanufactured alternator for $467: a $240 part, $16.80 of sales tax and 1.5 hours of labor at $140. The dealer fits a factory part for $862: $560 for the alternator, $39.20 of tax and the same 1.5 hours at $175. Nothing in between is padding. The gap is three decisions, which part tier, how many hours the job books, and who bills the hours, and our alternator replacement cost calculator above lets you set each one and see all nine combinations at once.

The published averages sit inside that spread. RepairPal puts a typical alternator replacement at $809 to $1,088, with $196 to $288 of labor and $613 to $800 of parts, before tax and local pricing. ConsumerAffairs (October 2025) reports $700 to $1,000 for mainstream cars, 1 to 2.5 hours of labor and $350 to $800 for the part. Both assume a new or OEM-grade part at shop labor. Bring your own remanufactured unit to a driveway and the same job is $257 plus a refundable core deposit.

The Part: Remanufactured, New Aftermarket or OEM

Three products get sold under the word alternator. A remanufactured unit is a used core rebuilt with new bearings, brushes and usually a new regulator, sold by the parts chains under a limited lifetime warranty. A new aftermarket unit is built from scratch by a supplier such as Denso, Bosch or the chains' premium lines, warranted anywhere from a year to lifetime depending on the brand. An OEM unit comes from the dealer parts counter in the automaker's box, at the highest price and, when the dealer installs it, with labor covered if it fails inside the warranty window. GM Genuine Parts covers most OE parts for 24 months and unlimited miles when a GM dealer does the work; Toyota's standard parts warranty is 12 months.

The chain-store prices we checked on September 7, 2026 anchor the low end. AutoZone lists Duralast remanufactured alternators for a Honda Civic at $209.99 for a 70 amp unit, $244.99 at 95 amps and $264.99 at 105 amps, each plus a $40 core deposit that comes back when you hand over the old alternator. Output rating is why the calculator asks about it: the 105 amp Civic unit costs 26% more than the 70 amp one, and a truck with a tow package or a police-spec 220 amp alternator sits above the standard part for its class. We use a 25% index for high-output units and let you overwrite the price with the number on your quote.

Those part prices are illustrative defaults from the same code that runs the calculator, not quotes for your car. The order never changes, though: for one vehicle at one shop, the OEM column runs roughly 60% to 80% above the remanufactured column, and all of that gap is the part. Read the table across a row and you are looking at the price of the box the alternator came in.

Labor Is Hours Times Rate, and Access Sets the Hours

A shop bills book time, the hours a labor guide assigns to your engine, not the time the technician actually spends. Alternator book times run from about an hour on a pickup where the unit sits on top of a longitudinal V8, to 3.5 hours or more where it hides under an intake manifold or behind a cooling fan. That is why the calculator asks how hard it is to reach before it asks who is doing the work.

The rate is the other half. AAA's 2026 labor-rate guide, citing the 2025 PartsTech shop survey, says almost half of U.S. repair shops charge $120 to $159 an hour and that dealers cost more, often by 25% or more. Tekmetric's 2026 index of more than 10,000 shops lands on a $132 national average, with state averages from $110 in Maine and Vermont to $161 in Alaska. Our defaults of $140 for an independent and $175 for a dealer sit inside both; type in the rate on your estimate and the matrix recalculates.

Put access and rate together and labor can outgrow the part. A V6 sedan with a low-mounted alternator books 2.5 hours: $350 of labor on a $270 remanufactured unit, an installed total of $639 in which labor is 55% of the bill. Push the same car to the buried preset at 3.5 hours and the job is $779 with $490 of labor. On those engines the cheapest thing you can do is not the cheapest part; it is the shop with the lowest rate that has done that engine before, because a technician who has to discover the procedure will not finish inside book time and some shops bill the overrun.

The Lifetime Warranty Pays for the Part, Not the Second Install

A limited lifetime warranty on a remanufactured alternator sounds like a free pass, and it is, on the part. Jalopnik's November 2025 explainer spells out the catch: the warranty replaces the part, the labor to fit it again is yours, it is usually good for one replacement, and it is tied to the original purchaser. So the real question is not whether the reman is cheaper today. It is whether the up-front saving covers the labor you might pay twice.

Run the midsize example. The remanufactured job is $467 and the new aftermarket job is $552, a saving of $85.60. A repeat visit costs $210 of labor with a free warranty part. Divide one by the other and the new unit only wins if the reman needs 0.41 more repeat installs than the new one would, which is the same as saying the reman would have to be about 41 percentage points more likely to fail while you own the car. Against OEM at $809 the saving is $342.40, or 1.63 repeat visits: the reman could fail, be replaced under warranty, fail again and you would still be ahead of the factory part on total cost. The calculator prints that break-even for every pair of tiers at your own hours and rate.

Two cases flip it. If your labor is free because you do the job yourself, the break-even disappears and the cheapest part with a lifetime warranty is hard to beat; the calculator says so. And if the alternator is buried and the dealer is doing the work, the OEM part's labor-backed warranty starts to earn its price: at the dealer's $175 rate the reman saves $342 up front but a repeat costs $262.50 of labor, so the margin shrinks to 1.3 failures, and on a 3.5-hour engine it falls below one. A part that is cheap to buy and expensive to reach is the one worth paying up for.

Is It the Alternator, or a Battery That Looks Like One?

Replacing a good alternator to cure a bad battery is the most expensive mistake on this page, and it is common because the symptoms overlap: dim headlights, a car that needs a jump, a dashboard battery light. The test is free. AutoZone tests batteries, alternators and starters at no charge, with the alternator checked on the car in about five minutes, and the other chains run the same service. Ask for the printout before you buy anything.

If you own a multimeter, the numbers are simple. A charged battery at rest reads about 12.6 volts. With the engine running, a conventional charging system holds roughly 13.5 to 14.7 volts, and a reading under 13 volts at idle means the alternator is not keeping up; parts retailers' own charging-system test guides use the same thresholds. One trap: most cars built in the last fifteen years run computer-controlled charging that deliberately drops output to save fuel. MOTOR Magazine's guide to smart charging notes readings as low as 12.9 volts and as high as 15 volts by design on GM's system, so a single low reading on a highway cruise is not a verdict. Load the system with headlights and the blower on high, or let the shop run a proper load test, before condemning the part.

Two other rules of thumb. A car that starts on a jump and then dies again within minutes has a charging problem; a car that starts on a jump and runs fine until the next morning has a battery problem, and our car battery replacement cost calculator prices that fix. And check the belt and its tensioner first: a glazed, slipping belt produces the same low voltage as a dead alternator for the price of a belt. Hybrids are a separate case entirely. Since the first Prius, hybrids have fed the 12-volt system from a DC-DC converter running off the high-voltage pack, as Vehicle Service Pros explains, so there is no belt-driven alternator to replace and this calculator does not apply.

Add the Belt, Skip the Rest

The serpentine belt has to come off to change the alternator, so the labor to replace it is a few minutes rather than the hour a belt costs on its own. J.D. Power puts a standalone belt job at $109 to $134 with a $25 to $75 belt; bundled into the alternator, the calculator adds a $45 belt and 0.2 hours, $76 in total at $140 an hour. If the belt is cracked, glazed or past 60,000 miles, say yes. A tensioner is worth doing only if it rattles or the pulley has play, and that is a separate line you should see priced, not folded into the alternator.

A battery that has been run flat by a failing alternator may not recover fully; have it retested after the repair rather than replacing it on the same invoice unless it fails. What This Calculator Assumes

Part prices are illustrative September 2026 retail figures for each vehicle class and tier, not a lookup for your VIN; the price field exists so you can replace them. Labor hours are presets by access difficulty, not a labor guide, and the hours field is editable for the same reason. Rates default to $140 and $175 an hour from the AAA and Tekmetric ranges cited above. The tier comparison and the matrix hold hours constant across tiers, which is fair for an alternator because the procedure does not change with the part. Sales tax applies to parts only; some states tax labor. The warranty break-even assumes a parts-store lifetime warranty covers the part alone, a new aftermarket unit is still inside its warranty, and a dealer-installed OEM part is redone at no charge inside its window; outside those windows a repeat costs part and labor again. Core deposits are shown but excluded from totals because they come back. Diagnostic fees default to zero; enter what the shop charges.
